Poised for Progress

I am delighted to be writing for the first time as the president of The Tube Council. Senior people from the vast majority of North American tube manufacturers recently asked me to serve in this capacity, and I was only too pleased to accept. Elections have been held to confirm board members and other officers. As a consequence, the board now consists of representatives from Plastube, Montebello Packaging, Alcan Packaging Cebal, Tubed Products, and Artube. Along with myself (Plastube), the officers are Vice President Jerry Ruud (Tubed Products) and Treasurer Jacques Sassouni (Artube).
The council has been representing the industry for more than seven decades. Much has changed in this time, but The Tube Council has remained true to the fundamental objective of promoting the tube as the package of choice. During the past two years, Christopher White (The Filling Station) has been particularly active and effective in this effort. The board has asked me to publicly acknowledge this fact and to pass on to Chris our heartfelt appreciation. The industry is stronger for his involvement, which we expect will continue for many years to come.
The packaging industry is not for the faint hearted, and this is certainly true of the tubes segment. Competition is fierce (as it should be), and customers are demanding (as they should be). Fortunately, the tube is an exceptionally convenient package exhibiting advantages in functionality and value. In addition, the tube is a very green product.
North American economies have been sluggish for an extended period, while various commodity prices have escalated, particularly in the last year. This has led to a difficult period for the tube industry with anemic growth and rapidly rising raw material costs. In reaction to these tough circumstances, many member companies have worked harder than ever to deliver value to the customer base in order to maintain positions in preparation for the inevitable upturn ahead. Despite the obvious strains on cash flows, tube manufacturers have continued to invest in equipment, training, and product development. We remain positive about the future and enthusiastic about the very special product we supply.
Members of The Tube Council have a long history of innovation. Many exciting developments are underway: from enhanced decoration capabilities to improved closure systems to new products being packaged in tubes, the list goes on and on. Additional details on these and other advances will be shared in this and future editions of Tube News.
